Is Cinematography the same as Photography?

By Tech

cinematography is shooting great video

Cinematography is the art and technology of motion-picture photography. A Cinematographer is also know as a Director of Photography and can be shortened to DP or DOP.

The differences between photography and cinematography are many. A single photograph can be a complete work in itself, where as a cinematographer has to work with the director to craft multiple shots that serve the story and keep a consistent look within the scene.

Shoot Data Back Up

By Gear, Tech

Sydney DOP cameraman data check

There are many ways to copy the shoot’s data, but unless you use software with a checksum you may not be copying everything every time.

I have bought and tried many different data transfer software apps and have recently found the best one yet, Hedge for Mac. Some of the others that I have bought and used are DoubleData, R3Data and Offload. While each has it good points they also fail in what I want them to do in some other ways.

The reasons why I think Hedge is the head of the pack is its speed. Basically it does what the others do but it does it faster . Its really only a little slower than using Finder, but does a checksum and writes transfer logs, meaning you have proof of the transfer being 100% correct. The speed of transfers and the ability to do simultaneous transfers to multiple locations is a huge plus!

So if you have had a data issue in the past or want to make sure you don’t have one in the future go check out Hedge for Mac. And if you like it, you can get a $10 discount by clicking here

Gear, gear, gear …..

By Gear, Tech

Does it ever end ? No, when it comes to film and TV gear. So with that in mind I have a bunch of new gear. New lighting frames 10 x 10, 6 x 6 and 4 x 4. Also a new Chromakey green 10 x 10 screen as well as some new new textiles for my other frames.

I also have a new monitor stand setup to make having a monitor on set in the right place easier and faster. This is a combination of a few Mathews products specially designed for onset monitors.

I now have a “low boy ” attachment for my Wally dolly kit. This enables the tripod head to be mounted to the T frame on the dolly, making for some really nice low angle dolly shots.

Then there is a load of other new gear, including a heap of Shot bags, C stands and more light stands.

All this new gear comes included with all my existing gear as part of my shooting package which means I can handle any shoot. Check out my gear list to see all my gear.

A really great use for drones

By Tech

It seems every man and his dog has a drone these days. The sad fact is though that the vast majority of these are either not equipped with a decent camera or are flown badly or even worse illegally.
To get great results you do need to get a professional drone crew. On shoots that I have been on by far the best results have been achieved by a two person Drone crew. One person to fly the drone and the second to frame the camera.
The good news is that there are better drones everyday equipped with better cameras giving more options to get the shot. I have to admit though I am old school and can easily see the advantages in shooting from a Helicopter with a stabilised mount. In this type of setup you can choose the camera and lenses you need rather than having to accept a fixed lense that distorts the image from prosumer type drones.

But all that aside, here is the best way to enjoy using a drone I have seen.
